Every renovation project comes with a few surprises, but every now and then one stands out as truly special. That’s exactly what happened on one of our flooring jobs right here in Pembroke.
During the building works for a home renovation, something completely unexpected was discovered beneath the old kitchen floor... a hidden working well!
An Unexpected Find
Beneath the Floor At first, the well appeared as a simple void beneath the old subfloor. But upon closer inspection, the homeowners realised it was an original stone well, likely dating back many decades and a small piece of Pembroke’s history right in the heart of this home. Instead of covering it up, the homeowners loved the idea of preserving it and decided to turn this unique discovery into a striking design feature that would tell a story and bring character to their new kitchen.
From Floor Prep to Feature Piece
To keep the feature safe and practical, a toughened glass cover was installed to allowed light to pass through while protecting the opening. The surrounding floor was prepared and levelled by our skilled team using part ply board, part latex screed and of course, a damp course was applied to protect the longevity of the new flooring. Now, the well is not only a conversation starter but a beautifully integrated part of the room’s design. It blends perfectly with the newly installed Project Floors French Oak herringbone LVT, creating a seamless mix of old and new, with history preserved within a modern home.
